Laurie Lidstone, Saanich Council Candidate
1. Are you familiar with the lingering issues created by the People, Pets and Parks Strategy in Saanich?
I'm very familiar with the PPP and appreciate all the work CRD DOGGS has put into their response in dealing with this issue
2. Has the People, Pets, and Parks (PPP) initiative been effective so far? Why or why not?
No, it hasn’t. In my view, it has done more to divide this community than any other initiative I can think of.
3. What aspects of the PPP, if any, do you think need to change?
I’d like to see a better balance in off-leash parks and designated off-leash spaces in Saanich and how they are managed.
4. How do you see Saanich supporting education programs related to Park, beach and trail etiquette?
Better signage for people with and without dogs.
5. Is the $1.7M taxpayer funding allocated to the PPP the best use of those funds for Saanich? Why or why not?
We should review all taxpayer-funded spending every year, not just the $1.7 million allocated to the PPP. Every program and expenditure should be regularly reviewed for its cost, effectiveness, measurable outcomes, and value to Saanich taxpayers. This would provide a fair and consistent basis for determining whether public funds are being used responsibly. This must be done before we invest any more money into this program.
6. Are you familiar with the Peg and Post fencing added to PKOLS this year? a. Do you support spending a further $270,000 to fully enclose the 1.7 km off-leash trail at PKOLS? Why or why not?
I would prefer the nature looking split rail fencing used in other places in PKOLS, but we also need to review all expenses annually in Saanich.
7. In seeking to be elected what do you stand for that you think would be important for our members to know about?
Our family had a dog for many years, but unfortunately, he passed away two years ago, and we haven’t chosen another dog yet. I walk weekly with my close friend Nancy and we usually visit off-leash parks—the few that are left. Her dogs are well behaved and have excellent recall, and I have always made sure to pick up after our dogs. Unfortunately, we are no longer able to enjoy the longer hikes we love at Mt. Doug (Pkols), and we really miss being able to enjoy this beautiful area with her dogs.
